Intesa Sanpaolo in Poland supporting the transition
to a sustainable economy
Intesa Sanpaolo is the only Italian banking institution present in Poland. It operates through the Warsaw branch, which is part of the international network of its IMI Corporate & Investment Banking Division. IMI CIB was born on 20 July 2020, out of the merger by incorporation of the investment banking subsidiary, Banca IMI SpA, into its parent company, Intesa Sanpaolo SpA.
The aim of Intesa Sanpaolo is to transfer and apply its knowledge also in Poland, a country where it has been active in various forms since the beginning of the 1900, to support the transition to a sustainable economy.
Sustainability can be a strategy that generates a competitive advantage and which, therefore, translates into an above-average performance.
In all sectors and at all levels, starting with the board members of our corporate clients, there is the belief that safeguarding the planet is “the” theme and affects everyone globally: people, companies and governments.
Even for those who do not have a keen sensitivity towards social and environmental issues, there is an awareness that the financial cost of failing to solve environmental and social problems is enormous, if only because in a world where billions of people are worsening their living conditions and becoming impoverished, it would be impossible to do business.
Infrastructures, industries and technologies are evolving at a rapid pace and digitization is helping to manage the huge amount of data we need to solve various sustainability problems, while facilitating the auditing and reporting activities needed to understand. if a proposal is a truly green, social and circular project.
Intesa Sanpaolo acts as a bridge between investors who are looking to integrate sustainability into their portfolios and issuers who need to raise capital to achieve their sustainability goals. By studying the needs of investors in detail, the Bank aims to offer issuers opportunities on how to improve access to credit, demonstrating ESG performance along with financial performance. The Bank’s task is to do everything possible to provide customers with the capital that allows them to invest in a more sustainable and therefore better future.
Green Bonds and Sustainability Bonds
Intesa Sanpaolo is one of the most sustainable banks in the world, included in all the main sustainability indexes. Sustainability is at the heart of the Bank’s activities, which pay particular attention to issues relating to climate change, with the awareness that innovation, the development of new products and services and corporate responsibility can contribute to effectively addressing the issue and related social impacts.
This awareness is at the basis of Intesa Sanpaolo’s choice to adhere over the years to numerous international standards, including UNEP FI and the United Nations Global Compact, with the aim of integrating environmental and social considerations in assessments relating to operations of the bank.
The banking sector plays a central role in defining a new concept of growth and development. Financial institutions have the power to facilitate access to credit for worthy initiatives from a sustainability point of view and, in addition to this, they can be agents of change, stimulating innovation and providing education.
Our Group creates solutions to sustainability problems and, as regards green financing, in 2018 it disbursed 1,922 million euros of new loans to finance the green economy, bringing aggregate loans from 2010 to 2018 to a total of over 18 billion of Euro.
Intesa Sanpaolo was the first Italian bank to debut as a “green” issuer, demonstrating its strong commitment to the growth of sustainable finance in Italy. In 2017, the Bank successfully placed a 500 million Green Bond, a title linked to environmental and climate sustainability projects, collecting orders for approximately 2 billion euros. The proceeds were fully allocated during the first year of the bond’s life and, as at June 2019, 75 projects were funded thus avoiding over 350,000 tons of CO2 emissions in just 12 months.
In 2019 Intesa Sanpaolo successfully completed the placement of its first Sustainability Bond. Demand amounted to over 3.5 billion euros, demonstrating the Bank’s strong positioning on international markets also in this specific sector. The operation closed with the placement of 750 million euros of bonds.
At the same time, both equity and debt investors are showing increasing commitment to these issues, including ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance) objectives in their investment strategies and developing financial products aimed at objectives with a positive environmental impact.
Rating agencies are also introducing methodologies for assessing the ESG rating of companies, shifting the focus from the sustainability of the individual investment project to the overall assessment of the sustainability of the company and its strategies.
Innovation and Circular Economy Financing
From this background and the strong drive towards innovation, Intesa Sanpaolo’s commitment to the circular economy was born, an economic model that aims to untie development from the exploitation of exhaustible natural resources and to redesign the industrial system.
Since 2015 Intesa Sanpaolo has been the first Financial Services Global Partner of the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, the main organization that promotes the circular model.
In its 2018-2021 business plan, the Bank has made available a plafond of up to 5 billion euros dedicated to companies of all sizes that want to adopt the circular model.
In 2018 Intesa Sanpaolo Innovation Center, a company dedicated to the frontier of innovation that acts as an accelerator for the development of the circular economy in Italy, created the Circular Economy Lab (CE Lab) in Milan, alongside Cariplo Factory, the first Italian center dedicated to the circular economy, in order to promote the transition to this new economic paradigm.
The CE Lab supports companies that have understood the value of the transition towards circular economy models, financing the necessary investments and assisting the CSR teams in communicating their business path to stakeholders. The CE Lab also works to facilitate collaboration between subjects belonging to the same value chain, to implement integrated sustainability projects with a wider spectrum and greater impact.
European Green Deal Financing
The Green Deal promoted by the European Union estimates allocating 150 billion euros to Italy for the activation of investments dedicated to environmental sustainability. The Intesa Sanpaolo Group has committed an additional 50 billion euros in financing to support Italian companies that decide to invest in environmental sustainability.
